During a trip to Asia Spring 2012, I met with Riffin Yung, Chief Marketing Officer of Royal Angkor International (RAI) Hospital in Siem Reap (Angkor), Cambodia. Owned and operated by Bangkok Hospital System, the hospital features 25 beds, which include four in the ICU. The hospital’s seven physicians (from Thailand and Cambodia) can treat emergencies. Patients with acute cases also can be flown via air ambulance to Bangkok.
I was impressed by the modern interior and cleanliness of the facility, as well as the lush courtyard gardens. Like everywhere else, there are healthcare challenges, and the hospital must have paying patients to survive. Unfortunately, poverty in the area drives many local residents to other resources. Tourists with insurance are required to pay up front and complete their own billing, which of course is another complexity. No matter the difficulties, RAI Hospital strives to live their mission of service with heart!
