Following are position descriptions of the most popular healthcare information technology (HIT) roles:

  1. Chief Information Officer (CIO): Responsible for all aspects of IT, including the IT system for patient care, revenue cycle, decision support and vendor contracts. This role is becoming more and more of a COO-type position involving strategy and financial planning with executive teams.
  2. Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO): Works as a bridge between IT and physicians to promote physician adoption of the IT system, as well as expanded uses of IT in patient care. Usually reports to the CIO.
  3. Director or VP of Patient Access: Manages all of the registration process and IT systems and coding on the front end of patients' visits.
  4. Director or VP of Healthcare Information Management (HIM): Provides management of the coding and charting and abstracting of patient records. Many HIS systems today include this in their software.
  5. Director or VP of Revenue Cycle: Involved in managing the revenue cycle and internal teams, from patient registration to collections, billing and coding. Also involves management of the IT software systems and vendors.
  6. Director or VP of Quality: Drives the quality initiatives and workflow changes to improve patient outcomes. Works directly with nursing, and at times, the IT department and IT system.
  7. Director of Clinical Informatics: Uses the IT system to work with nursing and physician staffs to improve outcomes. Works closely with quality and nursing staff on data improvement.
  8. VP of Customer Experience: Drives patient satisfaction. Position includes various aspects of organizational development. Works across many areas of patient care to improve total patient care experience. Goal is to increase HCAHPS scores for the hospital. (HCAHPS is the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey.) 
  9. Integration Specialist or Director: Handles all planning and work to integrate the various applications used in the hospital (or organization) with its EMR and IT system.
  10. Director or VP of Health Information Exchange (HIE): Plans and integrates hospital information within its system, broader community and/or other partner systems, to name a few.
